I’m not sure that there were any good running Chevette engines when the cars were new…
I’d be tempted instead to find a 2.5 liter 4-cylinder from an S-10 pickup. It’s set up for rear drive, you can find them with either 5-speeds or automatics, and there are still some performance parts available for the 2.5 «Iron Duke» engine. Besides, there are tons of them in the junkyard, much easier to find than the 1.4 or 1.6 liter 4 cylinder engine that was in the Chevette.
