The Chevette is a horrible car. I wouldn’t waste any time or money on one. If you really need to come up with a good swap, the 2.5 liter 4-tech (aka Iron Duke) ought to fit and is far superior to the hunk of excrement GM wedged under the hood of that abomination.
It depends on how hard you want to work and how much knowledge and skill you have. For example, my father in law once helped a neighbor put a 440 Chrysler into a Toyota Land Cruiser, no small feat and they were laughed at by everyone, until the neighbor won numerous awards for what he did by 4×4 magazines.
Also, I knew a guy in Utah who put the same engine into V.W. bug. Lots of work but it can be done.
I’ve seen them with everything from a turbo’d 6 banger, to a mildly built 454 big block.
So the possibilities are endless!
